Andrea’s Lockdown Story
‘This painting is representative of my lockdown work. It is an abstract expression of my feelings, a mix of confusion with little clarity and hope streaked with moments of despair. Bringing the warmth and sunshine from outside added contrast but also to the confusion I felt and feel.
The first two or three weeks were difficult; I wasn’t sure how I would cope without hugs, physical contact or swimming. I am on medication for depression. Then I realised lockdown gave me a focus. I knew how important it would be to get a routine into my life to survive and life became easier. Painting gave me a creative release, a freedom from the daily routine, an escape and an identity.
Being back in touch with the creative side of my nature has been an important influence through lockdown and something I will continue with. Over the last 30 years or so I have tended towards craft rather than painting and am delighted to have rediscovered paint and the flow of colour on canvas.
The lockdown has reminded me how important it is to give space and time to creativity.’
